The recently completed upgrades to Leeds Street will improve pedestrian access to Footscray Station and town centre.
Leeds Street was given a complete overhaul with a new platform tram stop, widened footpaths, road resurfacing, new public lighting and street furniture. A ‘Barnes’ style pedestrian crossing at the Irving Street intersection will create a safer crossing for pedestrians moving to and from the station.
Water sensitive tree pits have been installed for the 29 new Chinese Elm trees. The tree pits collect and filter storm water which sustain the trees. The State Government contributed over $2 million to the project and Melbourne Water contributed $140,000 for the tree pits.
The changes encourage street stalls and make for a friendlier, safer Leeds Street.
