Celebrate NAIDOC Week free in Footscray

Celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with free events right here in Footscray. NAIDOC Week 2012 will be held from 1 to 8 July.

Flag Raising Ceremony
When: Monday 2 July, 10.30-11.30am
Where: City of Maribyrnong Town Hall, Flag Poles Cnr Napier & Hyde Sts, Footscray

Join us to commemorate the beginning of NAIDOC Week and celebrate the contribution that Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders have made and continue to make to the City of Maribyrnong. Includes guest speakers, Black Olive morning tea and Jindi Worabak dance workshop.

Cultural Workshop
When: Monday 2 July, 11.30am-2pm
Where: City of Maribyrnong Town Hall, Flag Poles Cnr Napier & Hyde Sts, Footscray

Together with local elders and artists, come along to carve, burn and paint boomerangs and learn traditional basket weaving skills. Hear how the Wurundjeri are working to keep their culture alive today and be part of it! All ages. Lunch at 1pm.

Yolungu Boy — Film Screening
When: Monday 2 July, 12.30-3pm
Where: Phoenix Youth Centre, 72 Buckley St, Footscray

3 boys. 2 laws. 1 country.… Caught in a collision between the brave new world of rap, football and street cred and the oldest living culture on earth, Lorrpu, Botj and Milika are three Yolngu teenagers who share an epic adventure. Lunch at 12.30pm.

Scattered Tribes Mixed Media Exhibition Opening
When: Tuesday 3 July, 5.30-7.30pm / The exhibition itself is open July 4-14, Tues-Sat 10am-4pm
Where: Barkly Arts Centre, Level 1 / 233 Barkly St, Footscray

See the work of Aunty Vivienne Huston, Uncle Roy Alexander, Uncle John Hutchings and the late Aunty Isobel Loy done in collaboration with Liss Gabb and Ngardab Francine Riches. Features photographic, textile and sculptural works (contains images of deceased persons). Includes launch of Western Region Health Centre’s Reconciliation Action Plan. Presented by Barkly Arts Centre & Western Region Health Centre with Council support.
